Why the thief on the cross doesn’t overturn baptism What happened: Two criminals were crucified with Jesus (Luke 23:39–43). At first both mocked Him, but one changed, admitted his guilt, confessed Jesus’ innocence and kingship, and asked to be remembered. Jesus promised him paradise that day. We don’t know his baptism status: Many people before the cross were baptized by John or by Jesus’ disciples (Matt 3:5–6; John 4:1–2). Given the thief’s surprising knowledge, he could have heard and even obeyed earlier. We can’t prove he wasn’t baptized—and no one else can prove he was. Jesus had unique, in-person authority: During His earthly ministry Jesus directly forgave sins (Mark 2:5–11; Luke 7:36–50). Those special moments don’t set the ongoing terms for everyone after He ascended. Different covenant, different terms: The command to be baptized in Jesus’ name for forgiveness (the Great Commission) only took effect after His death and resurrection, like a will that becomes valid after the testator dies (Matt 28:19; Mark 16:16; Heb 9:16–17). The thief died before those New Covenant terms were preached and in force. Our pattern today: After the cross and ascension, the inspired message is clear: “Repent and be baptized… for the forgiveness of sins” (Acts 2:38). That’s what applies to us, not the one-time, pre-Covenant event that happened to the thief. Bottom line: The thief’s situation doesn’t cancel Jesus’ command for us now. Today, forgiveness is promised to those who hear the gospel, repent, confess, and are baptized in Jesus’ name.
